Flobots to Play Free Concert During Dew Tour

The Winter Dew Tour announced that Flobots, the band whose top-ten billboard hit “Handlebars” thrust them into the limelight, will headline at the Verizon Wireless music stage on Friday, Jan. 9, at the second stop of the Winter Dew Tour at Mount Snow, Vermont. Reggae-infused band Dirty Heads will open. The free concert kicks off at 4 p.m. at the base of the Carinthia mountain face.

As one of the most talked about newcomers of 2008, Flobots most recent release, Fight With Tools, sold more than a quarter million copies. The band recently joined the celebrated record label Universal Republic.

The six-man band began as a hip-hop trio in 1995 and evolved into the musical powerhouse they are today with the addition of live instrumentalists. Their live shows are defined by infectious beats enhanced by a high-octane rhythm section that includes bass, drums, funk guitar chords and a viola.

"We're really excited about playing this event. We always have a great time in Vermont and we're amped about getting to see the competition in person," said Andy Guerrero, Flobots' guitarist.

Dirty Heads hail from Huntington Beach, California and their music is an influence of reggae and hip hop styles infused with the raw energy of punk. Dirty Heads latest album, Any Port in a Storm, was released in September on EMG Fontana/Universal.

All music from the Verizon Wireless music stage is free to the general public including the Friday night concert with Flobots and Dirty Heads.

Similar to the Dew Tour’s summer competition structure, the Winter Dew Tour is based on a cumulative points system as the top snow athletes battle it out for a piece of the $1.5 million prize purse and the chance to take home the Dew Cup at the conclusion of the season in February.

Mount Snow Opening with Five Top to Bottom Runs

WEST DOVER, Vermont (November 18, 2008) – Mount Snow will open its slopes to skiers and riders on Saturday, Nov. 22. Thanks to a solid week of snowmaking and a little help from natural accumulation, Vermont’s southernmost ski resort will start the season with five top-to-bottom runs on three mountain faces, including two full terrain parks and three high speed lifts.

4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 marked the beginning of an intensive weeklong snowmaking effort. Mount Snow’s fan guns blanketed trails on the Main Face including Canyon, Standard, Deer Run and Long John, in addition to The Gulch and Nitro on the Carinthia face. Chute, on the North Face, will receive enough attention late in the week to be ready by opening day. Learning terrain will also be open near the Discovery Center.

“We’re very excited to have terrain available for everyone on opening day – from the just-learning beginner, to the hardcore freestyle skier or rider, to the expert looking for a black diamond. It’s all here, on day one,” said Mount Snow’s general manager Kelly Pawlak.

Mountain operations director Dave Moulton said that six to seven lifts will be spinning all weekend, including three high-speed detachable quads and a “magic carpet” learning lift. The Carinthia Base Lodge and Main Base Lodge, as well as the Summit Lodge, will be open with full food service and amenities.

Mountain manager Elia Hamilton reported that a variety of over 20 rails and boxes will be set up on Carinthia for freestyle enjoyment, with a full top to bottom park on Nitro and a smaller park on The Gulch.

Moulton pointed out that he’ll suspend snowmaking operations on open trails while guests are skiing and riding, but snowmaking will continue on other trails. Weekend snowmaking plans include Snowdance on the Main Face and Mineshaft and Inferno on Carinthia.

Opening weekend lift tickets will be set at Mount Snow’s midweek rate of $69 for adults and $56 for young adults. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Clocktower building and Carinthia Base lodge.

For updated information as opening day nears, visit the snow report at www.mountsnow.com.

The Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce held it’s annual installation dinner on November 13, 2008 at the newly reopened Hermitage Inn in Dover. Over 125 people came out for this yearly function.

Laura Sibilia, Executive Director of the Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce welcomed attendees and introduced long time valley resident Cheryl Rothman as the newest member of it’s Board of Directors. Rothman joins Lisa Sullivan of Bartleby’s Books, Laurie Newton of Mount Snow Resort, Magnus Thorrson of the Gray Ghost Inn, Chris Cooke of Valley Cab, Randy Terk of Accupay Payroll, Bruce Korb of the Nordic Hills Lodge, Joe Krusewski of the Matterhorn Inn, Randy Capitani of the Deerfield Valley News, Sarah Shippee of Scott’s Clean Sweep, John Redd of SkiHome Realty and Tom Consolino of Wilmington. Outgoing board member, Karen Gallivan was thanked for her time and dedication on the board.

Sibilia spoke at length about progress in the valley over the past year, highlighting the Blueberry Festival and the Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival as well as the communities commitment to economic development.

The ten day long Deerfield Valley Blueberry Festival in August combined events at businesses throughout the Deerfield Valley with “blue” themed activities. This festival was named one of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top 10 Events for the Summer of 2009.

The Chamber awarded Janet Boyd of Boyd Farm with the Chamber Person of the year award for her efforts and initiative with the Deerfield Valley Blueberry Festival, and noted her continued involvement with the Deerfield Valley’s annual Make-A-Wish duck race Memorial Day weekend.

The Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival, held during the last weekend of September, showcased Vermont wineries & cheese makers, food vendors, local crafters & artists, and featured a number of wine pairing events. This well attended first year event also received the award as one of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top 10 Fall Events.

Arlene Palmiter presented the Ralph and Vern Howe Community Service Award came to Bruce Mullen of Wilmington. Mullen’s involvement in the Deerfield Valley Rotary, the chamber, the Tri-Town Economic Development Committee, his new election to the Wilmington Board of Selectman and his success in securing municipal parking in downtown Wilmington were cited as critical factors for his selection by the Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce as the 2008 award winner. Mullen spoke about what a tremendous honor it was to receive this award after being in the valley for a few years.

New Membership Year Starting

Wow is it busy here at our lovely chamber offices! We’re in high gear for the upcoming Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival at the end of the month, knee deep in planning our Black and White Masquerade Dinner and Auction of the Vermonsters of the Deerfield Valley at the end of October, and working on the plans for our annual chamber installation dinner (which just might be a breakfast this year!) and community awards ceremony in November. Occasionally we also try to sneak away for a soccer game.

October 1st is also the beginning of a new chamber membership year. This past year we had some great successes, a few thrills and chuckles, a couple hundred or so meetings, and a truly dedicated board, staff and volunteer crew working on behalf of the business and residential community here in the valley. As a valley, we are making progress!

Sitting with Ann Coleman during the final bidding at last falls’ bears in the valley auction I had a front row seat to a witness what can happen with cooperation, collaboration and hard work. I believe we’re going to see similar results from this year’s Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival.

Thanks to the collaboration of many chamber businesses, town officials and employees, our legislators and state agencies and Steve Wrathall; combined with Chamber President Lisa Sullivan’s fortuitous comments to a Vermont Life representative at a travel conference, a fabulous luncheon at the Deerhill Inn, a dozen or so trips to points north for negotiations and meetings, one session trying to pin down legislators at the statehouse cafeteria, a beautiful sunny day bill signing with the Governor at the White House of Wilmington, a year’s worth of Thursday morning meetings with our dedicated volunteers, and the foresight of the Dover Economic Development Committee and Selectboard, we are about to host an inaugural event we believe will make a significant positive financial impact in the valley for years to come.

The potential for success for not just this festival, but for additional events to come and our greater economic survival, hinges upon the cooperation between the valley towns of Dover, Wilmington and Whitingham, and our valley’s interactions with its neighboring regions and the state at large. We are careful to try and encourage local collaboration with all of the chamber’s projects and efforts, and both Lisa and I have been actively involved with a number of other discussion and activities centered on economic development and collaboration.

The message (and data) we keep bringing to these meetings is that the valley is a serious economic contributor to the state, and our economy benefits school and social programs in many of the much larger population centers. We repeatedly advocate for better understanding, protection and assistance for the valley, including trying to help different entities understand the impact education funding has had overall and on our business owners who in particular are not income sensitive. Though we often hear that folks are sick and tired of hearing the valley whine about property taxes, we have also seen quite a few light bulbs go on when we talk about protecting this important state revenue stream.

These efforts have been winning us cooperation amongst entities willing to join forces to our mutual benefit, and also causing folks to think twice about what they thought they knew about the valley. We’ve spent a significant amount of time on advocating for greater collaboration and know we have to continue to raise the level of business and quality of life here in the valley. There are no quick fixes to our challenges and no business, association, town or region is an island in today’s economy. The answer to our shortage of bodies, time and money has to be a continued and growing movement to joining forces with those who share common causes.

So this year, when you think about renewing your membership or becoming a new member or friend of the chamber know that in addition to putting your name in front of 240,000 plus unique visitors to our web site, having access to group health and dental insurance, getting discounted rates on seasons passes for skiing and golf, promoting your events weekly in our newsletter and your promotions and packages on our website, you are also supporting a full time advocate for the valley.

Membership in the chamber grew by 18 percent this past year and 10 percent in the year prior and we intend to make that at least a three year trend.

If you don’t receive a packet for membership in the mail, or are a resident or second homeowner interested in becoming a friend of the chamber, please give either myself or Megan Longe a call at 464-8092.

Vermont's Governor signs new wine festival bill

Wilmington, VTVermont wineries and organizers of the Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival were in a celebratory mood last week when Vermont’s Governor Jim Douglas signed into law new legislation beneficial to Vermont wineries and the festival. Vermont Life publisher Tom Kelly, Commissioner Bruce Hyde from the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing and area legislators joined businesses and residents from the Mount Snow area at the historic White House of Wilmington for the signing.

“It’s a real pleasure to be here today in support of both Vermont agriculture and Vermont wine makers,” Douglas said prior to the signing.

The bill, H.700, was sponsored by Representatives John Moran and Ann Manwaring during the 2008 Vermont legislative session and allows Vermont wineries the ability to sell bottles of wine at festivals Previous Vermont liquor legislation allowed only for sales of glasses of wine, and festival organizer Laura Sibilia of the Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce says the new law will be a boon both for Vermont wineries and for visitors to this falls Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival.

“This is really an exciting opportunity for Vermont’s burgeoning wine makers,” she said, adding “the one stop shopping at the festival will give visitors an opportunity to sample, purchase, and learn about the majority of Vermont’s growing wineries.”

The Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival will take place in Southern Vermont’s Mount Snow Valley September 26-28 in 2008, and in addition to showcasing Vermont wines, will highlight the large number of quality small specialty food producers in the state. Vermont artisans of all types will round out this uniquely Vermont festival, which will include headline entertainment from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s brass trio Fanfare, and an education segment from the Vermont Grape and Wine Council

"The passage of the wine bill only makes it better. Expectations for the first annual Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival are even higher. For us, the event is a natural, Vermont Life readers are self described foodies”noted Tom Kelly, Vermont Life Publisher. “Working together with the talented and energetic folks at the Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce is a pleasure. Because of their efforts, the event planning is well in hand. We feel we can add a lot to the event. Vermont Life magazine has credibility and media reach in Vermont and the region. Culinary topics and enjoying the good life are a major interest of Vermont Life readers. Our readership is passionate about Vermont.”

Vermont Agriculture officials say wine is another example of how Vermont farmers are diversifying to find new markets. Vermont wineries have focused on using cold-hardy French hybrid grapes, but have also been experimenting with some other varieties. Honey, apples, pears, blueberries, and maple are also increasingly being used in Vermont wines.

Village Stroll and Baby Vermonsters

Get ready for another great year of Strolling in Wilmington, Vermont. This year’s season will kick off on May 9th with a Friday evening stroll, from 4 to 7PM. The highlight will be a hunt through the village to find forty "little monsters". School children throughout the Valley have created their own smaller tabletop versions of the Vermonsters, similar to the “baby bears” from last year’s arts program. A drawing to chose the full sized “Vermonsters of the Deerfield Valley” that will be unveiled Memorial Day Weekend will take place at the stroll. In addition, check out the recycled art expo inspired by found items from Green Up Day and created by our community.

Musical performances, children’s activities, art exhibits, wine tastings and shopping specials are all offered at the village stroll. There will be a selection of talents both indoors and out with classical music by Robin Matathias and her flute quartet, Jean Chaine playing his thirteen stringed archguitar, and High School percussion students with their own version of “Stomp”.
The young and young at heart will enjoy face painting, and trying out new tricks on our Circus Lawn. Three fine art galleries will be hosting “little monsters” as well as their own works including Pastels of Local Scenes at Anne Coleman’s, more “Small Works” at Jim McGrath’s Gallery, and new monoprints at Gallery Wright.
Apple fritters will be served by the Weathervane Inn at the stroll. Pickwells Barn will host a wine tasting provided by Honora Winery. Some of the downtown specials offered include a “Fancy Nancy” party with 15% off all kids books at Bartleby’s and 50% off all candy at The 1836 Country Store.
